The Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Professional Program at the University of Connecticut prepares students to sit for the North American Pharmacists Licensure Examination, more commonly known as the NAPLEX.  Our program represents an innovative relationship between teaching and learning with increased emphasis  on active student learning.  Our faculty has prepared an academic program of excellence and participates with you in the education process. The program has been designed to provide you the opportunity to participate in unique courses and experiential rotations to best prepare you for a career that maximizes your interests and aptitude.

The School of Pharmacy admits up to 100 students in each new class. Until the final year of the Pharm.D. Program, each class takes their required courses together.  The variety of course formats, relatively small class size, student activities and team assignments allow students to get to know each other well.  Course formats include lecture, practice patient counseling sessions, computer assisted instruction, discussion groups and labs. Pharmacy courses are taught by faculty with graduate students assisting in discussion groups.  Students are afforded many opportunities for faculty interaction and the ratio of students to faculty is approximately 9 to 1.  Students further interact with faculty through appointment to several of the school’s committees.  In addition to taking courses together, there are a number of very active pharmacy professional organizations, fraternities and sororities.

Through the Professional Student Research Program, the School of Pharmacy offers an enrichment opportunity for highly motivated students who wish to explore a challenging alternative educational experience outside of the traditional pharmacy curriculum. The goals of the program are to foster independent thinking and student-faculty interactions, and to clarify potential career options.  Students may also participate in the School of Pharmacy Honors Program and become an Honors Scholar or a University Scholar.

The professional pharmacy program requires completion of two years of pre-pharmacy requirements, two years in the professional program leading to a Bachelors of Science with a major in Pharmacy Studies (B.S. Pharmacy Studies), followed by two additional years leading to a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.).  The B.S./Pharm.D. program is a full-time, four-year professional program making the Pharm.D. graduate eligible to sit for licensure.  The baccalaureate degree, without completion of the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, does not qualify students to sit for the licensure exam.  Only students who are admitted into the Doctor of Pharmacy Professional Program receive the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Studies degree.

The first three years of the program include Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences [IPPEs] that provide students with real-world experience in a variety of practice settings.  The final year of the program consists of nine, one-month Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences [APPEs], more commonly known as rotations, where students gain in-depth experience in practice prior to graduation and licensure.

The school also offers dual degree programs where students earn the Doctor of Pharmacy degree in conjunction with a master’s degree in business administration or public health, or a  doctoral degree in the pharmaceutical sciences.
