UConn Pharmacy Takes Home the Pepto Bowl

It came down to the last question but the UConn School of Pharmacy team of Courtney DesJardins and Shannon McNeill  won the New England College “Pepto Bowl” Student Pharmacist Self-care Championship held at the 2013 New England Pharmacists Convention. The event, which is endowed by Procter & Gambel and affectionately called the Pepto Bowl after P&G’s over-the-counter product Pepto-Bismol, promotes active learning of self care topics to the participants as well as the audience.  The competition was developed by the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and the Nonprescription Medicines Academy (NMA).

DesJardin and McNeill scored in the top half out of eight participating teams from other New England pharmacy schools following completion of a written over-the-counter and self-care based exam.  This allowed them to advance to the afternoon’s live competition, a live, Jeopardy-style competition in which the top four schools participated. DesJardin and McNeill were in second place prior to the start of the final question.  Their correct answer combined with a strategic wager leap-frogged them into first place.

Dr. Marissa Salvo who served as the faculty coach for the team was enthusiastic about the win.  “We now get to proudly display the Pepto Bowl for the year!”  UConn won the inaugural competition in 2008, and it’s great to have the trophy back here a second time.
