HOPE’s Mission | To achieve sustainable advances in health care around the world by implementing health education programs and providing humanitarian assistance in areas of need.
Since 1958, Project HOPE (Health Opportunities for People Everywhere) has worked to make health care available for people around the globe. Project HOPE was inspired by Dr. William B. Walsh, M.D., a medical officer aboard a destroyer during World War II who witnessed poor health conditions in the South Pacific, especially among young children. He envisioned a floating medical center that would bring health education and improved care to communities around the world. Thus, Project HOPE began as the U.S. Navy hospital ship, the S.S. HOPE.
Today Project HOPE educates health professionals and volunteers, provides medicines and supplies, strengthens health facilities, trains community health workers, and helps to fight communicable diseases like tuberculosis and AIDS.
The Alpha Beta chapter of LKS donates to Project HOPE annually.
